Karina was diagnosed with metastatic alveolar soft part sarcoma two years ago at the age of 10. She's now in the 7th grade and attends Providence Classical Christian School. She's been through four major surgeries and is currently on a clinical trial of an experimental drug that has shown promise in at least one other person with her rare type of cancer. At right is Karina and her Make-A-Wish dog Teka.
Because Karina's cancer is 'incurable' by any known conventional therapy (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy), she and her parents have had to travel to receive the surgery or clinical trials drugs that reduce her cancer burden or control her disease.
